Useful in this situation, standing in as his own personal impression of fun.

He let his gaze rest dubiously on her, but didn’t make to steady her once more. In his experience, when a woman said she was fine, you either accepted it, or you dealt with a lecture on how woman weren’t delicate little flowers.

“Which, in turn, has you haranguing me,” He pointed out, “You’re making a cycle of abuse, Pepper,” He murmured, mulling over the deal with a look of deliberation, “Fine, but—and this is the important part—I don’t actually have to concentrate on the meeting. In fact, consider me a reluctant and not actively participating guest on that particular event.”

“It wouldn’t be a cycle, Tony, if you simply gave me an answer when I asked for one.” She rolled her eyes, not in the mood for his attempts to pin everything on her. Work may be part of her stress, but he was certainly the main reason for the pounding in her head — especially today.

The idea of going away with Tony for a whole weekend wasn’t as wonderful as many would think. If Pepper really wanted to relax, she would take a few days for herself, seclude herself some where, but that wasn’t possible. The Order would never allow it, for one, and, honestly, neither would Tony — not that he would ever admit it. Barely a few hours into her brief vacation and she ‘d get a call from one or the other. So to get around that possibility, she had to vacation with Tony.

Hopefully, it would be less painful than being bombarded by phone calls.

“Very well. You can play games on your phone for all I care, so long as you are present. I’m hoping that simply seeing you in a seat will be enough to appease the board for the first five minutes.” She breathed slowly out through her nose, hand returning to her head for a few seconds before smoothing through her hair.

“So where would you like to go, Tony? The house in Dubai? The London flat? Or just rent out an entire hotel in Venice?” She shot him a look as she leaned back against one of his workstations.

Sorry for such the formalities, its just the military man in me I suppose.” He bit the inside of his cheek and clasped his hands together as he didn’t want to disturb anything. ” Oh well that sounds wonderful, Mr. Stark is a busy man, I hope he is not working you too hard, oh Me? I am doing just fine Miss Potts, the world isn’t ending and no one has tried to kill me yet today. So I say that I have been successful so far.” he chuckled a bit to himself at the lazy joke.

“Water it is then,” she replied, making her way towards the kitchen. As she moved to grab a glass form one of the high cabinets, she continued to listen to his responses and address them accordingly. “It’s perfectly all right, Steve. I can understand how it may be awkward to transition from formalities to something more personal. Took me quite a while before I finally addressed Tony by his first name — and then it was only because he made me so mad that I used his full name.” One hand opened the fridge while the other pulled out the jug of water, pouring the liquid into the empty glass upon the counter before replacing it and closing the door. Then curling her fingers around the glass, she brought it into the living room, placing it down upon the coffee table.

“I’d say that is extremely successful,” she commented, a smile spreading across her lips in support of the joke he was making. She then swept her hands across her rear before sitting down upon the couch opposite of him. “Was there a particular reason for your visit, Steve, or was this just a pleasant social call?”

Had a sewing party with my friends this weekend to get ready for Dragon*Con

Picked up my sewing machine from the repair shop.

Planned on 100% sewing my Avengers Black Widow suit and only having the accessories left.

….

Machine breaks again after an hour.

So much for sewing this weekend.

SO MUCH WORK. SO LITTLE TIME.

As she turned away from him, Tony straightened up, mentally instructing the pieces back into their case, and stretching his arms once the weight eased up. He laughed under his breath at her threat of irritation, “I’ll keep that in mind for a rainy day,” He answered, lifting his gaze to catch the slight fumble.

Crossing the room briskly, he set a hand at her side with the intention of steadying her, “You could take a leaf out of my book, and give yourself a break once in awhile. If you keep this up, you’ll end up taking the break in hospital, and I think we both know the company would be in ruins by the time you get back.”

Eyes slipped shut and she breathed in deep, attempting to will her body into submission. Pepper was fine. Just a long week of work. Nothing more. One weekend of minimal work and she would be back to normal.

As she felt his hand upon her hip, lids fluttered open, then blinked once before green met blue. By pure reaction, she pulled herself away from him, gathering her composure and making sure she could stand firmly on her own two feet again. “Barely working one 24-hour period at a time is what you call ‘taking a break once in a while’?” She shot him a skeptical look. “If I followed that method of business, Tony, Stark Industries would be in turmoil any way.”

She took a few steps forward as if to prove a point that she was all right. “Hospital? That’s ridiculous, Tony. I’ve survived over a decade without you pushing me into an early grave, I don’t see why something would happen now — especially not over a little headache.” ‘Little’ may been a bit of a understatement, but she wasn’t going to get overly concerned over something that was most likely no more than a consequence of a lot of stress and little sleep.

“The worst that is going to happen is I’m going to get grey hairs — if I haven’t gotten them already.” Chest rose as she drew in a deep breath, still trying to will away the throbbing in her head. “So, I will go away with you this weekend…” Her words purposefully trailed off as she let that statement settle into his head. “If you promise to to go to this quarter’s meeting with the board and agree to at least one MIT guest lecture or commencement speech so they stop haranguing me every year.”

Turning slightly, Tony regarded the female, satisfied to find a genuine fascination. Even with an ego like his, he couldn’t help the appreciation for praise, especially when he happened to outdo himself on a frequent basis, which was part and parcel with being a Futurist, aiming for better than the best.

“Thank you, thank you,” He quipped taking a mock bow.

He stretched his arms, flexing his fingers and rolling his shoulders, adjusting to the additional weight, as she closed the space between them. There was that fleeting look in his eyes which disappeared a second after, even as her fingertips brushed over the armour.

“I think that earns me a smile, admit it, you want to smile, and you’re not half as irritated with me as you pretend to be,” He offered up, the corners of his own lips turning up wryly, “In fact, I think you’re pretending the whole time, no offense, but I know your irritated face, and I think what I’ve been seeing is more the over-worked, under relaxed Pepper—We should go away for a weekend,” He decided, leaping between subjects of conversation seamlessly, in a way most people probably couldn’t understand.

Pepper may not be a fan of Tony’s narcissism and wild antics, but she was always appreciative of his creations — especially ones that furthered her objective. There was no rule against enjoying your ~~undercover assignment~~ work occasionally.

The glow of the arc reactor shone through her fingers as her gaze flickered up to meet his own, just in time to miss that flash of emotion in his eyes. When he spoke, she shook her head, teeth purposely digging into her bottom lip in an attempt to stop the corners of her mouth from spreading. “You asked for applause. There was no mention of a smile,” she countered, her tone playful. The presentation of the new armor had put Pepper in a good mood. So much so that his antics were proving fruitful. The tiniest of smiles was working its way across her lips. The only way for her to hide it from him was to turn away. “I am not going away with you, Tony. I have work to do — as do you,” she mentioned, eyes glancing over her shoulder to him. ”If you keep avoiding your work, you will see my truly irritated face.”

Pepper took a few steps forward and away, prepared to end the topic right there before he could protest. However, as her heel clicked against the floor for another time, that jabbing pain from earlier shot through her head. The headache had never really disappeared, but the throbbing had diminished slightly, having been overcome by awe. Now it was back with a vengeance. Vision became slightly blurry and she teetered upon her feet, weight shifting off balance so she had to reach out to the workstation beside her for stability. The other hand reached up to her hairline, gently rubbing down to her temple. “On second thought, perhaps one weekend off couldn’t hurt.”
